Notify an interventional procedure
Tell us about an interventional procedure you think should be assessed by NICE.
Who can notify a procedure?
Clinicians and healthcare professionals are the main notifiers to the programme. However, anyone can notify us about a procedure.
Clinical knowledge of a procedure will help you complete our notification form. We encourage patients, members of the public and non-clinical NHS staff to discuss the procedure with a clinician first.
Criteria
A new procedure must be:
a surgical procedure - making a cut or a hole to gain access to the inside of a patient's body
a procedure accessing the body cavity without cutting
a procedure using electromagnetic radiation, for example x-rays, lasers.
It must also:
be available within the NHS or independent sector, or be about to be used for the first time, outside formal research
not yet be considered standard clinical practice.
You can also let us know about safety concerns and new information you have about our existing interventional procedures guidance.
Or inform us of new evidence which you think might help the interventional procedures advisory committee reach a different decision.
Help with our notification process
If you're not sure about the suitability of a procedure for the programme, contact us at [email protected].
You can also find out more about the process in our programme manual.
Notifying medical technologies
Companies should contact the NICE Advice service to ensure their medical technologies are directed to the appropriate NICE team for assessment.
What to do when guidance is still in development
If NICE guidance for a procedure does not exist, we should be notified. In the meantime, the procedure should only be used in the context of research, or in exceptional circumstances, for individually named patients. For more information, please read the updated process to oversee the safe introduction of new procedures.
